KOBIE (A07121853)

The tale of Kobie, who came in with Anna in late February, is a sad one. Kobie and Anna were well taken care of and lived happily with their owner in southern Virginia until he lost his home. He moved into a camping trailer and his bassets moved with him. But someone at the campground reported him to the county, and sadly the owner had to give up the dogs because he had no place else to live.

Both dogs soon ended up with BROOD. Kobie and Anna were upset and very dependent on each other; initially, Kobie would not eat if Anna was not right there with him. When the kennel caring for them was closing for a month, foster homes needed to be found. But Kobie was thought to have diabetes, so only Anna initially was taken by a foster family. When Kobie found his foster home, he did just fine for the first month, taking his daily insulin shot after each meal with no trouble at all. But then he suddenly ended up in the ER one night because he had too much insulin in his system. After weeks of tests and monitoring, it has been determined that Kobie has diabetes - seemingly Type 2, which is common in cats but unusual in dogs. This means that Kobie's people will need to monitor his condition - easily done through observation and with a Diastix dipped in his pee or an easy-to-use blood monitor (much like diabetic humans use to prick their fingers to test their blood sugar).

Kobie, who is about 7, is adorable - he is a tricolor, mostly brown, who has an animated face with a big nose and big, dark eyes. He loves to eat, especially carrots and apples and green peppers and dried sweet potato chips - but he barely gains an ounce. He is a recovering counter cruiser - a mild case. He has a lot of energy and LOVES to play with his foster brother and sisters (he especially gives his big lab sister a workout!), but if they are too tired, he will empty the toy basket and contentedly amuse himself, flinging and chasing his toys around the room! He always comes to greet people, but he is not a jumper. He does have a strong interest in playing with the cat - and in her food and litterbox, so they need to be out of reach if he is sharing his home with any felines.

He loves walks and is good on a leash. For a Bbasset, he can be a real speed walker! Stops to sniff here and there but often just enjoys motoring down the road at his mom's walking pace. He is also fine in the car and willingly jumps in for his ride to the vet or the groomer or the dog bakery. He is good with baths and ear cleaning but, like most of his fellow Bassets, he is not fond of nail trimmings, but they can be done.

He likes to curl up in a donut bed with raised sides - he feels safe. But he will also test you to see if he can get away with sleeping on the couch or chair. He is perfectly house-trained and is fine eating around his brother and sisters.

All he needs now is his forever home! Won't you consider opening your heart to Kobie?

**The age of many BROOD dogs is unknown, as very few come with official records. The estimate on the dog's age is usually the initial estimate given by the receiving shelter, which may be different from that given at the time of initial checkup. Different veterinarians may also give different ages, and those different opinions are sometimes reflected on the records.

***BROOD's adoption fees are determined based on age of the dog. Individual adoption fees are shown with each dog's listing.
