ROCKY (A03280996)

Better have a hankie handy- Rocky's tale is a heartbreaker. Appropriately named by the shelter where he was rescued, this little guy has made a fight to survive! Rocky was originally thought to have a broken leg when picked up. But it's worse than that. At some time in his past, his leg had been broken and healed wrong. We'll never know if this happened while he was a lost stray, or if previous owners never bothered to care for him. He came to BROOD unable to use one of his rear legs, and in order to get around he has to drag his good rear leg around to the side while standing on the bad one, then hop forward. This makes it impossible for him to navigate even the smallest step, and hills are extremely hard on him. If that's not enough, he was covered in fleas, so much so they were moving over the top of his fur like a carpet. Not to mention ticks, ears and eyes full of dirt and gunk, and worms. With his bad leg, he couldn't even scratch from all the itching and movement of the fleas. Of course with so much blood being sapped from him, he was very malnourished. Without having eaten on a regular basis he was very underweight, and the knobs of his backbone were actually sticking up. We have no way of knowing how long this little guy lived like this, or how he managed to survive.

All of that is the sad part. Now here's the good news. He's been cleaned up and is being fed quality food regularly. His extra long beautiful ears have been cleaned out and treated, his eyes cleaned up, and the fleas, ticks and worms eradicated. And of course he is receiving loads of love daily! His leg is what is still in question, whether the damage can be repaired or whether he will he lose it. This little hound is very loving; he's happy and tries to play with his foster brothers and sisters. He is only 2 yrs old. He is well behaved and has a wonderful attitude. How can an animal go through so much and still be so sweet?! It just shows what a huge heart Rocky has, and what a will to live.

**The age of many BROOD dogs is unknown, as very few come with official records. The estimate on the dog's age is usually the initial estimate given by the receiving shelter, which may be different from that given at the time of initial checkup. Different veterinarians may also give different ages, and those different opinions are sometimes reflected on the records.

***BROOD's adoption fees are determined based on age of the dog. Individual adoption fees are shown with each dog's listing.
