miss
lucy and the colonel
I have been adopting basset hounds for about 20
years now, and can’t imagine life without one. When Clark died in
February, 05, after a short bout with cancer, I wasn’t sure that I
would adopt another. I still had Miss Lucy (at left), and perhaps it was time for
us to become reacquainted – just us two girls. Miss Lucy was diagnosed
with heart failure about 4 years ago – and, like most of us women, she
is an anxiety prone lady. I was told I would not have her in 5 years,
but she’s still with me and going strong!
So when the one-year anniversary of Clark’s
unexpected departure rolled around, I began to think about getting
another friend for Miss Lucy. We talked about it, and looked at some
options. It came down to Stanley or Boss Hogg. I’d have taken both if
I thought I could manage it, but I had the chance to meet Boss Hogg, and
I fell in love.
So, Boss (aka Beauregard, or “the colonel”) -
pictured at left - came home with me and became a part of the family! I had forgotten what
a delightful and challenging ! experience adopting an adult dog can be,
but I am grateful to BROOD for connecting the three of us. We’ve had
some adjustment challenges, most revolving around pigs’ ears and/or
attention from mom, but we are adjusting.
We don’t believe in violence, and the mission
statement in this house is “We don’t get angry at throw-ups. We
clean them up and move on.” So we continue to get to know one another;
we go out for long walks; we get belly-rubs on the couch and towel-downs
when we come in from the rain. And we are all looking forward to more
good times, treats and a romp in the sun.
Life is a joy!
