we've
created a pack!
For years we owned a Sheltie, Missy, and a
basset/shepherd mix, Bean, that we had adopted. When we were ready to
adopt again after they had passed away, we started looking for a basset
mix like Bean. On Labor Day weekend of 2008 we found Bailey, a
basset/bloodhound mix, with another rescue group. We were his third
family in five years, so we were happy to become his forever home.
At the end of 2008 we started looking for a companion for Bailey. After
adopting two basset mixes and enjoying them so much, we decided to look
for a basset through BROOD. In January 2009 we adopted a feisty little
female, Glory. One of her front legs had been broken and didn't heal
properly, but that didn’t slow her down! She and Bailey play together
with little Glory usually instigating it! She'll jump on him or stand on
her hind legs as if she’s boxing with him. We just love her
personality!
We soon realized that Glory had a bit more energy than Bailey, so we
started looking at the BROOD website for a young female to play with
Glory. When we saw Louise and read about her, she seemed perfect. In
April 2009 we added Louise to our family! She had been found as a stray
with two other bassets. Louise and Glory have become great playmates.
Although Bailey would join in at times, the girls played together most
often. They are similar in size, age, and energy level. We felt that our
family was complete!
Then, in July 2009 we received an e-mail from BROOD saying that one of
the dogs found with Louise had been turned back in to BROOD because the
adoption did not work out. Josephine was an adult female who could
possibly be Louise's mother. BROOD wondered if we would be interested in
adopting her. We read the e-mail that morning, and by that night we were
on our way to pick her up! This time, a basset had found us! Josephine,
or Josie as we call her, has adjusted well to her new home. She is a
sweet dog who enjoys being with her humans. The three girls play
together quite well with Bailey occasionally joining them. It can get
intense at times, but it is quite entertaining to watch!
As I look back, I realize that we adopted one dog during each season of
the past year. We certainly did not set out to adopt four dogs, but it
seems to have worked out quite well. Thanks to all the wonderful people
at BROOD for their help and for all they do! We are looking forward to
many wonderful years with our pack!
